Because Coo-peration Saves Lives

The Pigeon Project is an initiative started by the Starlight Trust – the charity behind HelpWildlife.co.uk

The project is still in development but our broad aims are : –

  • to provide members of the public who find sick, injured, or lost pigeons with advice and support
  • educate the public about pigeons and counter the myths which lead to their malignment
  • campaign about pigeon welfare issues such as netting, pest control, and pigeon racing and provide the public with resources to fight back about the mistreatment of pigeons
  • form a community of UK pigeon rescuers and work together to develop consistent and effective protocols for pigeon care and treatment
  • provide free or discounted testing to pigeon rescues to assist with ensuring pigeons have access to excellent care and treatment
  • provide training and support to pigeon rescuers looking to do their own faecal testing
  • fundraise to support pigeon rescuers in providing excellent care and treatment
  • provide a platform for the responsible adoption of homeless domestic pigeons

As our tagline – “Because Coo-peration Saves Lives” – suggests, this is intended to be a collective project, involving rescuers who, likes us, believe that

  • pigeons are remarkable, wonderful animals who deserve the same high standard of care as any other wild species
  • domesticated pigeons deserve high-quality care and comfortable lives which should not depend on their ability to perform in ‘sports’
  • where pigeons and humans come into conflict, issues should be resolved through deterrence and habitat management, not through lethal control
  • wild pigeons of all species should be respected as wild animals. Whilst many do adapt to life in captivity, this should be reserved for disabled birds and should provide them with as natural a life as possible, outside with other pigeons, not in a house as a ‘pet’.
